Studies

Students in Linguistics and Cognitive Science courses may participate in experiments for extra credit.

Extra Credit

Your extra credit is measured in credits. Each study has a credit value, according to its length. One credit corresponds to about 30 minutues of participation.

Please refer to your class syllabus or ask your instructor for the maximum number of extra credit units you can receive via experiment participation, and for the value of each credit toward your final grade.

Students who are taking multiple LING/CGSC courses: For each experiment in which you participate, you may apply that credit to only ONE course (you may apply multiple credits to the same course, up to the extra credit limit). If you are enrolled in more than one course offering extra credit, you'll need to sign up for different experiments to receive credit in different courses. You will be asked to sign a form to indicate which class you want your extra credit for. Please make your decision before you sign up for the experiment. Transfer of extra credit units to a different class is not allowed after you sign the form.

Eligibility

Please be aware of the eligibility criteria that are indicated for each experiment and do not sign up unless you qualify. You will not receive any credit for participating in an experiment you do not qualify for. If you do not qualify for any of the experiments, you may complete the alternative assignment for the same amount of credit.

You may participate in more than one experiment, but you may only participate once in each experiment.

All experiments require that you be at least 18 years old to participate.

Making Appointments

Email the researcher to make an appointment. Make note of the time and location of the experiment when you sign up. You are responsible for arriving on time to all experiments. Please consult the Campus Map in advance to see where buildings are so you know how to get there. The research labs often run on tight schedules – if you arrive late you may have to reschedule.

Appointment Cancellation

If you have to cancel your appointment, please contact the researcher of the study at least one day in advance.

Alternative Assignment

If you are not eligible to participate in the following experiments, or if you want extra credit but do not want to participate in experiments, you can choose to do alternative assignment(s) for extra credit. Please refer to the Alternative Assignment section.
