Structure of English (LING/EDUC677)—This course is a required course in the MA-TESL program at University of Delaware. Taught as a combination of lecture, problem-based learning, and seminar-style discussions, the course explores issues in English syntax and morphology and prepares students to be effective and knowledgeable ESL and English teachers.
Introduction to Linguistics (LING101)—This course is a freshman course at UD and satisfies the university's Multi-Cultural Course requirement. Students learn about the basic skills of linguistic analysis, starting with phonetics and proceeding through phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. The course also includes modules on sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and a survey of languages of the world.
I am a Linguistics and ESL instructor at the University of Delaware.
I'm from Tulsa, OK, which is a big city in north-eastern Oklahoma. I have lived all over the country though, as well as living in Germany as a child. I consider Oklahoma to be my home, however, with north-central Pennsylvania running a close second (both my mother's and father's family live in Potter Co., PA).
My educational background is in French Comparative Literature and Women's Studies. In addition to English and French, I speak Spanish and have a working knowledge and interest in Portuguese and Italian. I have also studied Japanese and Chinese (enough to be dangerous, not enough to hold a conversation). I've also a little knowledge about Magyar, Russian, and German. I have also done research and data gathering on Austronesian languages, particularly Toba Batak, Bahasa Indonesia, and Javanese.
I also have a page, called Green Silences with info about my life outside linguistics. This is where you can find out all the really strange and unusual things about me.
Research Interests
My research interests include morphology and morpho-syntax, with collateral interests in sociolinguistics, gender studies in linguistics, and semiotics.
Here at UD, I am working on morphosyntax. I am particularly interested in the relationship between word order and morphology. I hope to unite these different interests into a more unified and precise conception of the morphology module of language as the locus for idiosyncratic linguistic behavior. My previous research has focused on the microparameters involved in the passive/active verb alternations in Toba Batak, Javanese, and Bahasa Indonesia.
Currently, I'm interested in developing methods for creating grammar and general language curricula that are grounded in morpho-syntactic theory.
