Opening Trees 2.1.2

[These instructions were created for version 2.0.1 of Trees. They should apply equally to the current version 2.1.2.]

Find the folder containing the Trees 2.0.1 program. Double click on the "Trees 2.0.1" icon to open the program.

NOTE: At least at the library computing site, we have found that the program will not open successfully by double clicking on the Trees 2.0.1 icon. Instead, you need to start the program by dragging one of the grammar file icons onto the Trees 2.0.1 icon. Then everything should work fine.

When the program opens you will see a couple of windows like this. From the file menu choose close, to allow you to choose the grammar you want to use.

From the File menu, select Choose Grammar..., and in the dialog box that appears, find your way to the file practice.gr inside the Trees folder. Double-click on practice.gr, or highlight it and select Open.

When you select practice.gr nothing will happen - you will just see a blank screen. In order to start building a tree you need to select New from the File menu. This will bring up a pair of windows like the following. On the left is the palette of tools for building your trees, and on the right, in the window labelled "Untitled Document 1", is a blank workspace for your trees.

Now you are ready to start building trees. For instructions on how to build a simple sentence structure using the grammar practice.gr go to the next page of instructions.
