Figuring Interim Grades

Here are some instructions on how to figure out what score you're currently on track for. [This formula valid with all scores in except for the final exam.] See below for current class-wide grade breakdown. Many people are in a position to make a significant improvement to their grade based on the final exam.

Homework Assignments:

10 assignments so far, total points available 110; worth maximum of 45%: take homework total, divide by 110 and then multiply by 45, to give a score out of 45.

In-class Tests:

2 tests, total points available 100; worth maximum of 20%: take test total, multiply by 0.2, to give a score out of 20.

Participation credit:

We have made tentative assignments of participation credit, worth maximum of 10%. Send email to Ted Eastwick (tbear@udel.edu) to find out about your projected participation credit and projected course grade. The participation credit will be rechecked at the end of the class. Based on the criteria specified in the syllabus, credit was assigned as follows: default score of 8 for regular attendance and some participation; reduced to 6 or 7 in cases of regular or chronic absence from discussions and late assignments; increased to 9 or 10 for high or exceptional levels of active participation in the course ("active participation" can mean more than just talking a lot!).

Formula:

(homework * 0.41) + (tests * 0.2) + (participation * 1) = current score out of 75
projected score = current score * 100/75

Breakdown of credit:

Homework: 45%
Tests: 20% (2 x 10%)
Final exam: 25%
Participation: 10%

Note: these scores reflect a downward adjustment of the targets.

A 90-100% C+ 75-78%
A- 88-90% C 71-75%
B+ 85-88% C- 68-71%
B 81-85% D 58-68%
B- 78-81% F below 58%

A: 17 (a: 12; a-: 5)
B: 35 (b+: 12; b: 9, b-: 14)
